10 Tips for Creating a Successful Amazon Affiliate Site
In previous blog posts, we’ve talked about how to get started in affiliate marketing, choosing a niche, and how to capitalize with affiliate marketing. Today, we’re going to expand on that last one and we’re going to share our top 15 tips that’ll ensure your affiliate marketing site(s) are profitable for years to come.
We have a lot to cover, so we’re just going to dive right in!
1. Choose a Strong Amazon Affiliate Marketing Niche
One of the first steps in making your affiliate site a success is choosing the right niche. When you’re trying to choose a niche, think of something you’re passionate and knowledgeable about. If you’re a hardcore audiophile, your niche might be something to do with music. However, since “music” is such a broad topic, you’ll want to narrow your niche down a bit; but keep in mind don’t narrow it down to super specific topics because you’ll be catering to a smaller demographic which means fewer sales.
Going with the music niche, you might choose to focus on creating a site geared toward instruments. While this is a smaller segment in the music area, you would want to focus on one particular instrument, like guitars.
You site could do reviews on a variety of things related to guitars such as acoustic guitars, electric guitars, guitars for beginners, guitar kits, etc. You get the picture.
Remember, you don’t want to do is get too specific and create your affiliate site that’s dedicated to guitars for left-handed people, for example.
2. Learn SEO to Outrank Your Competition
SEO (search engine optimization) is going to play a very critical role in how successful your site is. If you want to be on the first page of Google’s search results, you have to optimize your site so that your target consumer can find your site, reviews, and so forth.
Some SEO skills you need to be proficient at include:
- Know how to choose high ranking keywords for your posts
- Familiarize yourself with the competition
- Creating a solid SEO strategy for your blog and social media
- Creating and sticking to a regular content schedule
- Understand how to use Google analytics
- Understand the importance of link building
If you don’t have the time to learn SEO and create a strategy, you can learn the basics and hire a freelance SEO strategist to do the work for you.

3. Use “Buying” Keywords
What sort of phrase do you typically use when searching for a product on Google? Do you just search for “guitars?” Of course not! If you did, your search results probably wouldn’t generate the desired results.
This is why it’s important to use “buying” keywords. These keywords include:
- Best [product] of 2019
- [Product A] vs. [Product B]
- Best [Product] under $200 (or whatever price range)
By using buying keywords, you’re likely to get more traffic and more of a commission because these are the people who want to buy!
4. Organize Your Site so It Can Be Navigated Easily
As you create posts on your site, use categories and tags so that your readers can browse your other content. If your posts are unorganized and difficult to find, people aren’t going to want to look around to see what else you’ve written about.
In sticking with the guitar example above, you can create categories for acoustic guitars, electric guitars, guitars for beginners, guitar kits, etc. You can use tags like reviews, buying guides, and comparisons as well. Heck, you can even create categories based on brands and price points, too.
5. Avoid Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes
Have you ever signed up to a site’s newsletter because you liked it’s content only to find the newsletter clogging your inbox with constant junk emails asking you to read their latest review on XYZ? Maybe they’ll send emails that are useful once in a while, but having an aggressive marketing campaign can have the opposite effect.
Instead of flooding your audience’s inbox, focus your time and energy finding products your audience care most about. Also, create enough quality content that will entice people to buy what you’re promoting.
6. Increase Commissions with International Affiliate Links
As an affiliate marketer, if you’re only using affiliate links for the country you live in, you’re reducing the possible commission you’d earn from international visitors who click on your link. Luckily, the Amazon Affiliate program has a free tool called “Amazon One Link” that will automatically change your affiliate links based on the country they reside in.
So, if you have someone in the UK click on your affiliate link, that link will be changed to Amazon.uk.
Unfortunately, if you want to market to many countries, you will need to sign up to each countries’ Amazon affiliate program. You can learn more about that here.
7. Use Images to Link to Your Affiliate Links
This is one of the most overlooked affiliate marketing practices! When someone is reading about a product, they’re probably going to click on the picture of the product rather than a contextual link. If that picture isn’t clickable or brings up the image on screen when it’s been clicked, that’s one less person to be directed to Amazon.
By using a picture of the product you’re reviewing and making that a clickable link, you’re increasing the number of visitors being directed to Amazon interested in buying something from the site.
8. Create Lists and Guides
A fantastic way to increase your earnings as an Amazon affiliate is to create lists. They can be best rated products of the year, gift guides, best selling products under a certain price range and so forth.
These lists will focus on products are already good seller’s, therefore you can bet that the people who’ll click on your links will be interested in buying them when they read your review. You may also want to create a table at the beginning of your posts to compare the items you’ll be listing. Tables are a great way for your readers to get a general overview of the products, their prices, pros and cons, and whatever information you think would help your readers make a decision.
How do you know what products are best sellers? All you have to do is go to the Best Sellers page on Amazon and choose the appropriate option.
9. Be Honest!
In a world where trust means everything, you aren’t going to rave about every product you review. There are bound to be some products that have a few flaws but are still acceptable options; then you’ll have some products that are a complete waste of money.
Be honest in your reviews!
If your readers notice that every product is the best thing since sliced bread, your credibility is going to be questioned. People will wonder if you’re just saying positive things to make a sale. If they find out you’re being dishonest, that’s one less potential conversion… And is something you don’t want!
10. Create Quality Content
This should go without saying, but the more in-depth you can go in your reviews and product comparisons, the more likely people will buy from you and it’ll increase your rank on Google.
Content creation can be a very time consuming aspect of affiliate marketing, but there are services and freelancers who can do all of that for you – you just have to post it and share it on social media.
Also, it’s a great idea to update older content to reflect what’s popular at the time. For example, it’s the holidays and you created a “Best Guitars to Give the Guitarist in Your Life” gift guide and it’s a few years old. When you update the list to reflect the current best-rated guitars, it’s relevant, useful, and is more likely to convert to purchases.
Bonus Tip: Don’t Give Up!
Part of affiliate marketing is having the understanding that your site isn’t going to generate income right away. It is going to take some time before you can see all of your hard work come to fruition. However, you cannot get discouraged!
It’s easy to feel like the odds are against you and you might even second guess your decision to start an affiliate site. If you stick with it and stick to your plan… Your hard work will pay off.
Final Thoughts on Creating a Successful Amazon Affiliate Site
Many people think they’re cut out for affiliate marketing and sign up to join the Amazon affiliate program. However, it’s not a walk in the park. In the beginning, you aren’t going to bring in thousands of dollars every month. In fact, you might only bring in a few dollars! Even though the journey will be long and sometimes unprofitable to start, you shouldn’t let that discourage you.
Affiliate marketing is a business and it should be treated as such. You have to have a clear plan and stick to it if you want to be successful! The very first step toward being a successful marketer is to be willing to work hard and do your research.
With a bit of perseverance and choosing the right niche, you’ll be earning a nice income in no time.
